There are at least two other “versions” of the famous olive trees Vadell painted, all with panoramic, and Romantic views of the surrounding countryside. In amalgamating artistic genres, Vadell was best able to exploit his talent for capturing the life of the trees en-plein-air, evident in the way the dappled sunlight falls on their gnarly, engorged trunks. Yet, the imagination of the viewer registers a kind of realism that is intensely private, a world the artist knows and understands to be distinctly Spanish. Vadell’s work has been labeled as “Late Impressionism”, yet the impasto that leaps off the ground (Masonite), suggests life, beyond the transient and fleeting.
