The painting that inspired this offset lithograph was auctioned at Sotheby’s.

The overall design of the subject did not change, yet the two works are markedly different in tone, with the painting is brighter in its use of orange and reds. The preparatory sketch that inspired the painting is also illustrated on these pages evidence of la Freysnaye’s skills as a draftsman. What is unclear is why the printmaker presumably with the permission of the artist or the estate, chose the more somber tones in the production of the lithograph. For an offset, this is a beautiful work and with a beautiful frame to match, a very good start to anyone’s collection.
