This is an offset lithograph made after the 1957 painting that explored Kline’s fascination with the Industrial landscape of his native Pennsylvania. While the imagery is stark: the broad brush strokes reveal two things: that inherent in the work is anthropomorphism, humanity, made manifest in the sweeping imagery; some interpret the black paint on the surface of the canvas also to be the machinery that is operated by man, however, for Kline, the machinery has a life on its own. A symbiosis perhaps between man and the means of mechanised production? The paper is taken up by the entirety of the image.
