Valmier, Georges . b 1885 Angouleme, France. d. 1937, Montmarte, France

Title:

Composition, c.1935, signed lower right in black ‘G.VALMIER’

Technique:

Gouache

Ground:

heavy wove 40 x 29 cm approx.

Condition:

This work was examined prior to framing. There was substantial foxing on the back of the work that appears to be the result of being stored in an environment that was moist. The surface of the work itself is, however, in excellent conditions with no cracking or loss of paint. This suggests the use of a quality ground, quality paint and a trained artist.

Note how ‘Composition’ above achieves balance through the harmonious use of autumnal hues that the ‘Composition’ on offer lacks; particularly with the paper being ‘split’ in half with the brown and yellow juxtaposition. Nevertheless, Salon’s painting is a fine painting indicative of a moment in time when Modernism was expressed ‘architecturally’ then influenced painting.
