This was one of many black and white collotypes that were commissioned by the writer to illustrate in his work on the Cubist movement. It is believed that L’Art Cubiste, compete with all illustrations, both coloured and black and white, would be near impossible to find. With respect to the subject matter, Picasso made the pipe a motif on his work on several occasions, the lithograph, Composition with glass and Pipe, 1947, is one such example. The viewer is reminded that in 2 dimensional works, shapes and objects were influenced by Picasso’s interest in sculptural forms.
