de la Fresnaye’s cubism was marked, seen in this Still Life by a juxtaposition of strong linear forms and undulating, curvaceous patterns, that are in both cases, lines and shapes found in the natural world. This manifest in the crisp line work of de Fresnaye’s man made world; building like structures that surround the elaborately shaped flatness of the table, embellished with a vase of shimmering mother of pearl and donned with highly stylised roses. The ostentatious use of colour and patterns seen here is typical of de la Fresnaye’s disposition with colour; to use a palette that best highlights the tension between cubist principles and surrealist tendencies. An excellent start to anyone’s collection.
