Little may be known about this competent artist, however, it can safely be said that she was a highly skilled artist. This work belongs to the Realist School of (French) art history, yet something about the work belongs to a bygone era, where such drolleries were captured and turned into works that moralized and astounded with their simple beauty, and that work was the work of Chardin and his depiction of the everyday in French Provincial life. Delastre has taken a slice of life and crystalised it with deft skill: the result is a depiction of a simple, educative task, of an elderly woman reading to a younger female servant, possibly the elder woman’s daughter, a task with far greater significance and importance than the simplicity of the subject matter conveys.
