This is an exemplary work from Maurer, one of the most influential and well-respected living artists to emerge from Europe after WWII. Her work on offer at Salon defines the German penchant for linearity and precision that was particularly pronounced during the 1970s. Maurer’s kind of abstraction was neither optical nor monumental. A print like that on offer defied the decorative; resulting in a representation that engages the senses. The complexity of Maurer’s work arrives when it time to reach a conclusion about what messages the artist may be wishing to convey. While the coloured ribbons are layered to mimic a sense of space and perspective, the strategy is nevertheless evidence of Maurer’s work harking back to the past while very much in the Post-Modern World. All in all the attention to such an art historical allusion suggests that Maurer’s work pays homage to the Renaissance perspective being one of the scientific principles of the Renaissance. It is certainly the case that the artist achieves a sense of beauty, balance and harmony to this.
