What marks Derain’s work from other Fauvists is not the use of colour, as much as the beauty he saw in nature. In this lithograph based on an earlier watercolour, the writhing forms within his compositions capture the spirit of art nouveau, an artistic movement that coincided with the rise of Fauvism. His representations of the landscape took on a mythical and majestic quality and with this characteristic, Art Nouveau became one trait that Derain never abandoned when representing nature, a motif he was fascinated with. This quality can also be seen in his paths and roadways that curve and intersect with elegant ease as this the case in ‘”Hyde Park” and in the present example, as the in the blue tree rises to gently form a triumphant arch, indicating the entry point to a new beginning for those people gathering on either side of the clearing.
