A work closely resembling “Maria”, (see coloured woodblock in this Inventory and Illustration), and other notable examples that are extant in Museum collections throughout the world, confirms the artist’s affinity with Marian imagery as a the subject matter. The gesture of the “penitent” head, was a stylistic manifestation of Hofman’s exploration and preoccupation of sorrow, forgiveness and compassion, ideas Hofman explored in his work.
